In 1866, New York City (still only Manhattan at this point) and Brooklyn began creating official birth certificates. These certificates can be found on the Municipal Archives' Historical Vital Records website and in person at the Municipal Archives in Manhattan. We recommend searching the Historical Vital Records website by certificate number.

Vital Records has birth records (since 1881) for all of New York State except New York City. It does not have these records for New York City (the boroughs of Manhattan, Kings (Brooklyn), Queens, Bronx, and Richmond (Staten Island)). For instance, if a requester intends to order two copies of a birth record online, the New York City Health Department charges $15 for each record and only one processing fee of $8.30. Hence, the total cost in this instance would be $38.30.

New York began statewide registration of births, marriages, and deaths ("vital records") in 1880-81, under supervision of the State and local boards of health. Compliance with the law was incomplete until 1913 or even later; therefore certificates are lacking for many events.
